| Getting to South Africa | ||||||||
| South Africa is primarily a "fly in" destination with several international carriers that have regular and reliable services. Our national carrier, SAA offers regular flights from most international centers. There are other more adventurous ways of getting here either overland or by sea. There are few ocean liners that visit South Africa on a regular basis, check with your local travel agent. The overland route from Cairo, Egypt in North Africa, can be a fantastic and rewarding experience. It is strongly suggested that you find a reputable tour operator for an overland trip as there are many obstacles waiting for the un-wary traveler. | ||||||||

| Once in South Africa, there is a well developed infrastructure for getting around. There are several domestic airlines that offer regular scheduled services between the major centers as well as private charter companies that will chart your own route. Several inter-city bus services have almost daily schedules between all the main cities stopping at many interesting towns along the way. The Baz Bus follows the Eastern coastal route with a Hop-on Hop-off fare, a real fun way to see South Africa for the budget traveler. There are several luxury train services as well as a domestic main line service. | ||||||||
| On the Road | ||||||||
| The road in South Africa is excellent and is probably the best way to see the country. There are many car hire companies from luxury to absolute budget or be a tortoise and carry your house with you, hire a camper. Traveling by road is generally safe and South African motorists are courteous. Vehicles here are right hand drive and travel on the left of the road. You must be in position of a valid drivers license carried with you at all times. Be adventurous and hire a motorcycle for a few days or embark on an 11 day tour from Cape Town with SAMT. Petrol (gas) stations are found in all towns. | ||||||||
